Deciding on a new dog!!!!

Post by Sinner on Sat Aug 22, 2009 7:51 pm

Hi everyone.....I have been thinking about a new hound. After 20 yrs break from the show and breeding world I have decided that I would maybe like a geyhound. Not being familiar with the breed I had a long chat and a pat with the girls and hounds promoting GAP (Greyhound Adoption Programme for rehoming ex racing greys.)at the Brissie Ekka.( Royal show). W e look after our sons dog "Pepper" from time to time and she is built like a greyhound with tons of speed and energy but a very gentle girl too. So, I have sent an email to GAP Qld, with the idea of being a foster parent. They stay with the foster parent for 4 to 6 weeks until they are socialised with most things that a normal pet would experience. This way we can familiarise ourselves with the breed and can decide if this is the dog for us......I would love to get an ex race dog to show ( They can be dual registered) That would be down the track(excuse the pun) a bit. I love the solid blue and the fawn ones.....What do you all think????? Smile Smile

Well, Doesn't time fly.....I have just successfully fostered an ex racing greyhound "Hail Brutus" for a month.... He was huge....Head could reach and "surf" the kitchen benches. He has been an absolute dream... very good in alll regards. Have walked him twice daily. Was very clean and settled to sleep outside. Very quiet and great in the whole neighbourhood with kids, big dogs, small dogs, bush turkeys, cats .... I even got him playing "chasey"....He loved the beach and the local shopping precint....even went to coffee with the girls...Very gentle inside and just slept on his designated doona . It was sad to part with him.....he was a gentle giant, but he has gone to a lovely home.....I will get the next one in January.....

I've never seen a greyhound in public without a muzzle on. Is this law? Obviously they're bred to race and kill, is that the reason? I'm afraid if my non greyhound could get his teeth on a cat, he'd be killing it too. Anyone out there to educate me?

i believe that the law requires greyhounds to wear a muzzle in public ,yes because of their extreme prey drive.BUT ,i think (someone correct me if you know different) that GAP greyhounds(Greyhound adoption program) may be exempt.

Yes they have a muzzle due to the pray drive.. The are not agressive just trained to chase small fluffy things that run so they wear them to prevent anything form happening..

There is a "green collar" this is when a greyhound is socialized for months and desensitized to all the things they may want to chase.. IF the dog passes they get a green collar and they HAVE to wear that in public but not a muzzle.. Not all dogs pass the test but most with the training and the socialization do pass and dont wear a muzzle anymore..

Thats right guys. Once they pass the assessments, GAP greyhounds wearing the green GAP collar are allowed by SOME councils to go unmuzzled in public..My guy was so good on lead. He would be attentive but no effort to chase ....what dog wouldnt chas a cat ... Most of my shepherds would but of course they weren't raised or socialised with them!!!! The muzzling law dates back to the 1920's when they were more "blooded" for the track and of course it was feared they would chase and harm all small animals.... Of course I met many people on my walks that thought he was muzzled because he was aggressive....They would be amazed how quiet , gentle and uninterested in their small fluffy when I was talking with them....More public education needed !!!! Very Happy Very Happy

Can't go wrong with one of these beautiful dogs. I just love them, and they are real couch potatoes and have such gentle loving natures. Good luck with your next one. Lucky you.

Update well overdue.....Brutus was with me for only one month before going to adoptee home. He was perfect......I mean perfect.... Did not bark.....was so gentle inside and ouside....Loved everyone, got on well with all the dogs he met and I taught him to wait for food and before exiting the garden and the gates and before coming inside. Such a wonderful "man". He even began to play with his toys before leaving for his new home. He had such a comical way and truly"smiled" when greeting you. My next one arrives in January, so I have a busy time ahead with xmas, a trip to Adel., new foster dog and first grandchild arriving......Forget about grooming!!!!! LOL.... Very Happy Very Happy

Forgot I'd posted details on Brutus .....must be REALLY senile.....oh welll...guess I'm allowed at my age . Must be the heat, although I have my airconditioned groomin' room running now. Makes a huge difference to energy levels and comfort. Cant imagine how I coped before. Very Happy Very Happy
