Detangling Tails

Hey there, does anyone know of an easier way to detangle a horses tail when its twisted into that "dread lock" style? (sorry about the description (horse owners will understand lol)). Detanglers are pricey and was curious if anyone has any tricks or even if you have a product to recommend? I've been told Top Tails is good (at $27 for a tiny tube it better be!) but after feeling it I'm unsure if it's going to do the job..

Try the Wiggles Dorothy Detangler - about $12. Or, try "The Stuff". Can't think of the price offhand, but it works. Mind you I haven't tried them on a horse, but it may be worth a try.

I got some cowboy magic, JM recommended it , I think.. I was told to not use a lot or Have to rinse very much..only used it once.
It was OK, that was on a schn.

Is the wiggles detangler the one for kids hair? from the supermarket?

You can use anything with silicone in it, which is what all the above mentioned products have. On the ingredients it will be listed as methicone, dimethicone or amodimethicone. Go to the supermarket and buy any of the conditioners that say smooth and straight, pantene is great, and also a leave in conditioning spray. You need to blow dry with warm air to activate the silicone molecules and make the product work.

thanks guys, the Top Tails has silicone in it but was pricey, I might have a look in my supermarket or at Cowboy Magic. However I can't use a hairdryer though as there are no power-points down at my paddock.. will a silicone product still work its best without a dryer? confused

I have used a Sunsilk product which I am not sure exactly what it is called but it is a anti frizz serum type product. My daughters pony doesnt get the dreadlocks but she does have the type of tail that gets very knotted. I found it keep the mane and tail knot free for a couple of weeks. My daughter wash her pony first of course then put in the serum while the mane and tail was still wet and brushed through.

Take as warm water as you can manage. Silicone needs heat to make it slippery.

I used to have a horse with a really thick ringlet tail. Best and cheapest way was to smother it with baby oil and comb out. The wash and condition. Leaves it really shiney! Smile

I was thinking the same thing, those tangles are impossible. Even leaving conditioner in there for 1/2 a day or so, combing, then washing and conditioning. Lets know what works best.
