Advice for getting local vets to display your business card

Post by snaggywoo on Tue Apr 09, 2013 2:19 pm

Hi everyone
Any tips for getting local vets to display your business card on their counter?
I have been taking my cute puppy to my local vet for her 2nd round of vaccinations and she has been to puppy school for her first session. But other than this I took my previous dog to the vet in the old suburb I lived in so they don't really know me.
I have mentioned about my dog grooming business and that I'm local to the area. I asked it from the perspective of "Have you got a bunch of business cards for your vet that I can give out to my clients in this area? And would you be willing to display my card on your counter in return for giving your card out?"
Even though I have been going to this vet I guess I am still relatively new to them (and I can't help that I have a young looking face). The girl said she would ask (some senior person) and get back to me.
Is this usually the way it happens?
I imagine it will be more difficult for vets in surrounding suburbs that don't know me at all?
I guess the main barrier is the vets don't know me and wouldn't want to risk having cards on their counter for someone who they don't know.
Should I ask to speak to the "office manager" (so I'm talking to the decision maker) and should I come up with a brochure and print a small number of copies that I can specifically give to other pet/dog businesses that introduces myself before I ask about giving out my card? I do have a website now with lots of great details but I doubt people will make the effort to visit the site.
Any tips would be appreciated?

I really admire your enthusiasm. Just leave a small stack of cards everywhere. Vets & pet stores. They will refer work your way once you get grooming. I've found not everyone will network but there is no harm in trying. Again when you can show some grooms you have done then you have something to sell. You will surprised how quickly it will take off and you have a very professional set up. Don't be so quick to tell people you have NO experience aside from your training as it may be a deterant. Now you have your set up get grooming and let the rest slide into place as you go. You've put alot of work & money into your set up and your website looks great but now the proof is in the pudding....... Your going to be fine........Wink Smile.

Do u think I should be doing it a bit more casual and just say...here r my cards feel free to pass them on if anyone is interested? Is this what u mean when u say just leave a small stack of cards everywhere?

I guess I just want to be careful with them and pass on the cards to people who might actually put them on the counter rather than just throw them in the bin as soon as I walk out. I'm not a big corporation and while cards r cheap it is still my hard earned money they are essentially throwing out and it adds up if everyone does it. I guess I now have a bit more respect for business cards or brochures from small businesses that might get put in the letter box.

Perhaps you could take photos of your best grooms and put them in a folder - nicely presented and go to the vet and show them, so that they know what you have to offer. They may be more open to displaying your cards if you do that

They would probably be more willing if they had seen your work.

Find out the breed (if you haven't already) - do your research and get detailed instructions. I aways leave a bit on if I'm not sure - can always take it off if the owner is not happy Wink
