Grooming book evaluation

Post by snaggywoo on Mon Jul 30, 2012 9:15 pm

Just looking for something to dip my toe in the water and start to read about practical styles that clients would look for.

I saw this book at Clipper World about trims for dogs in family settings:

http://www.clipperworld.com.au/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=364

And this book that says it is good for beginner to advanced:

http://www.clipperworld.com.au/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=209

Do people think these are good books just to dip my toe in the water and get a bit of an idea of the theory side of things?

2 very good books to have. Notes from the Grooming Table is often called "The Bible" amongst groomers Smile

Hi Snaggywoo.

Be aware that for rarer breeds, if you have a day or two's notice then check online on breed specific websites for grooming tips.

For example, I have a curly coated retriever, which if you groomed it as per "the bible" would leave his coat in an unshowable condition for a week or so.

Are you talking for pet grooming or show grooming?

If you will be grooming any show dogs the owner should tell you. Notes is a good beginner book and that book is for pet trims. It will tell you handstrip or pet trim.
If you will be getting alot of mix breeds the theory of five is also good. It makes alot of sense and you can figure trims out more sensibly. I go on the Nash Academy site to get trim info too. They don't have many on but the few I have found pack a helluva punch for pet trims. They look good and keep their shape longer. They make sense to me too, go figure.

We have both of these books in our salon and if you do go and do any training they would probably want you to have either both or at least one of them. Cheers

I went ahead and ordered both books (Theory of Five and Notes) as well as the first and 2nd edition of the Doggy Dooz DVDs so I have lots of reading to do Very Happy

Yes I figure I'll get the most from hands on training once I have read and digested those books.

Thanks again for all the suggestions so I know I am on the right track. My poor pooch Honey spent the weekend getting "examined" as I read. Funny...she gave me a look after a while as if to say "cut it out and just leave me alone!" lol! Laughing
